Cher, Gypsys, Tramps and ThievesOne of the most dominant and endearing acts of the rock era, Cher had her first hit single in 1965 and is still performing today.  Released in 1971, Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves was her first solo #1 single and first solo gold record.

  • Singer, actress, television star, fashion icon, Cher has done it all.  Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1946, Cher dropped out of school at just 16 years of age, moved to Los Angeles and took acting classes while supporting herself by working as a dancer in the clubs along Sunset Strip. 
  • In 1962, Cher met singer Sonny Bono – he was working for Phil Spector at the time.  Cher became Sonny’s housekeeper.  Sonny introduced Cher to Phil and she scored a number of gigs as a backup singer on recordings such as the Ronettes’ Be My Baby and the Righteous Brothers’ You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.
  • Around 1964 Phil produced Ringo, I Love You; Cher’s first single which she recorded under the name Bonnie Jo Mason – it was hugely unsuccessful.
  • By 1965, Sonny and Cher had become husband and wife and were on the way to stardom.  They released their first single, I Got You Babe, which reached #1 in both the US and the UK.
  • Cher 2Cher began her solo career simultaneously, releasing in 1966 her first million-seller song, Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) which peaked at #2 on the US charts.
  • By the early 1970s The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was being watched by over 30 million viewers every week.  It played for three years.
  • Cher had numerous solo hits throughout the ‘70s including Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves, Half-Breed and Dark Lady.
  • Sonny and Cher divorced in 1975 but Cher’s career kept going as she reinvented herself with the 1979 disco-oriented album Take Me Home.
  • Cher has appeared on Broadway and in such films as Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), and Moonstruck (1987).  The latter earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
  • Her next musical peak came in 1998 with the album Believe – the title track became the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK.
  • Still wildly popular, in 2008 she signed a $180 million deal to headline the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for three years.
  • Cher’s awards include, an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, a special CFDA Fashion Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Cannes Film Festival Award.
  • She has sold 200 million records worldwide and is the only artist to date to have a number-one single on the US singles charts in each decade from the 1960s to the 2010s.

  • Cher 3Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves was the title track from Cher’s 1971 album – her seventh solo album – although the album was originally called Cher.  It was renamed to capitalise on the success of the single.
  • Released in September 1971, the song was written by Bob Stone.
  • Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves was Cher’s first solo a #1 US single.  It achieved gold status in the US.
  • The video for the song was Cher’s first solo music video.
  • The song has been covered by, Cilla Black, Nirvana (with some lyric changes), and English punk rock band Anti-Nowhere League.
  • Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves has also appeared in a number of television programmes including: The Simpsons twice, first where a character named Richie Sakai sings the song in the karaoke room the Simpson family visits and second, when a mechanical Cher doll is placed to distract the paparazzi in front of Ned Flanders’ house; The X-Files; and Gilmore Girls.
