  • Hailing from Lubbock, Texas and known as a country singer, Mac Davis also made quite a name for himself as an actor and songwriter.
  • Mac wrote and produced three hit records for Elvis Presley; In the Ghetto, A Little Less Conversation and Memories.
  • In the 70s Mac launched his solo career and had a handful of charting songs including, Baby, Don’t Get Hooked on Me, Stop and Smell the Roses, One Hell of a Woman and Lord, It’s Hard to be Humble.
  • In 1974, Mac was awarded the Academy of Country Music’s Entertainer of the Year award.
  • As an actor Mac had his own television variety show for three years.  He then appeared in a number of movies including, North Dallas Forty (1979), Cheaper To Keep Her (1981), The Sting II, and The Dukes of Hazzard movie.
  • Mac was listed as one of 12 Promising New Actors of 1979 by Screen World magazine.
  • In 2000, Mac was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.  He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the recording industry.

 Bellamy Brothers Let Your Love Flow CoverA country music crossover act, The Bellamy Brothers had a huge hit in 1976 with a Neil Diamond reject, Let Your Love Flow.

  • The Bellamy Brothers are really brothers!  A duet featuring David and Howard (real first name = Homer) Bellamy.
  • The boys hail from Florida.
  • Known predominantly as country singers, David and Howard have racked up over 20 #1 singles on the US country charts and featured on them over 50 times.
  • Still performing today, they have released over 50 albums.
  • The brothers were first noticed in the late 1960’s by a friend of recording artist Jim Stafford.  He and David wrote Spiders and Snakes which became a Top 5 hit for Jim.  Howard became Jim’s road manager but singing was in the blood and, in 1975 The Bellamy Brothers were signed by Curb Records.
  • Their first serious single, Let Your Love Flow, hit #1 on the US charts.  Then, in 1979, they hit #1 on the country charts with If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me.

  • Let Your Love Flow was written by Larry E. Williams, a roadie for Neil Diamond.  Neil was offered the song but turned it down.
  • Let Your Love Flow was recorded by The Bellamy Brothers in 1976 and reached #1 on the US charts.
  • Let Your Love Flow was back in the UK singles chart in 2008 after it was used in a Barclaycard advertisement.  It peaked at #21.
  • In 1979, Joan Baez released a cover of Let Your Love Flow.

Every Night – Phoebe Snow – 1979

Phoebe Snow - Every NightWith her  astounding four-octave voice, Phoebe Snow had a 1979 hit with Paul McCartney’s, Every Night.

  • Early in 1972 Denny Cordell – who along with Leon Russell, owned Shelter Records – visited the Bitter End Club in Greenwich, New York.  There he first heard the voice of Phoebe Snow and was so taken with it that he signed her on the spot.
  • Phoebe’s first album, Phoebe Snow, sold over a million copies and produced the wonderful single, Poetry Man.  The same year she was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Artist category.
  • Phoebe performed as the opening act for artists like Jackson Browne, Paul Simon and Linda Ronstadt.
  • Phoebe’s second album was produced by Phil Ramone.
  • Rolling Stone called Phoebe; One of the most gifted voices of her generation, Phoebe Snow can do just about anything stylistically as well as technically … The question that’s still unanswered is how best to channel such talent.
  • Phoebe Snow 2After the birth of her daughter, Valerie, Phoebe spent long periods away from recording.  Born December 10, 1975, Valerie was born with severe brain damage.  Phoebe refused to institutionalise Valerie and cared for her at home until Valerie died in 2007.  Phoebe’s commitment to Valerie severely limited and almost scuttled her singing career.
  • In 1998, Phoebe received the Cultural Achievement Award by New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. She was also the recipient of a Don Kirschner Rock Award, several Playboy Music Poll Awards, New York Music Awards and the Clio Award.
  • Phoebe suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on January 19, 2010 and slipped into a coma.  She died on April 26, 2011 at age 60.

  • Every Night was written by Paul McCartney and first released on his McCartney album in 1970.
  • Phoebe Snow included the song on her 1978 album Against the Grain and, in 1979, released it as a single.
  • The 5th Dimension also covered Every Night on their 1970 album Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes.
