Jeans On – David Dundas – 1976

February 25, 2015

David Dundas Jeans On LyricsIt’s not often a member of the British aristocracy gets to sit on their country seat and the UK top ten at the same time but it happened to Dundas, aka Lord David Paul Nicolas Dundas, back in 1976 when his song, Jeans On, hit the UK and US charts.

  • David Dundas is a bona fide lord.  Son of the 3rd Marquess of Zetland, he is now rightly titled, Lord David Paul Nicolas Dundas.
  • His 1976 single, Jeans On, earns David (I mean, Lord David) entry to the one hit wonder club.
  • Lord David went on to release further singles including Another Funny Honeymoon (peaked at #29) and Where Were You Today, but he is remembered for his one big hit, Jeans On.
  • Lord David began his music career as a writer of advertising jingles.  In fact, at least two of his singles, Jeans On and Where Were You Today, had their beginnings as jingles.
  • Still in the music business, Lord David is going to be 70 years old this year and is known for writing film and television soundtracks.

  • Jeans On was originally an advertising jingle for Brutus Jeans.  It was so popular that the jingle’s writer, David Dundas, with the help of iconic songwriter, Roger Greenaway, transformed it into a full length song and released it as a single.
  • In 1977, David (I’m letting go of the “Lord” bit – it gets rather tedious!) included Jeans On on his first album.  Self-titled it was the first of his three albums.
  • Jeans On peaked at #3 on the UK singles chart and #17 on the US chart.
  • David also released a French version of Jeans On – it was called Blue Jeans.
  • Keith Urban appears to be the only musician of note to cover Jeans On.
  • Fatboy Slim sampled the opening piano riff for his 1998 track, Sho Nuff.  Check it out; David is given credit as co-writer.  Coincidentally, Fatboy Slim’s track was also used in a commercial.  This one was for the SEAT Ibiza car.
  • Jeans On lyrics.

You Are The Woman – Firefall – 1976

February 17, 2015

Firefall You Are The Woman 1976A groovy little tune from a band with a rock ‘n’ roll pedigree; Firefall’s 1974 hit, You Are The Woman.

Firefall 1afirefall fax

  • Firefall hit the ground running with quite a rock ‘n’ roll pedigree.  Rick Roberts had been a member of the Flying Barrito Brothers and guitarist with Stephen Stills’ band, while Jock Bartley, formerly a backing singer for Gram Parsons, had been in the band Zephyr where he replaced Tommy Bolin who had left to join The James Gang and then Deep Purple.
  • That was in Boulder, Colorado back in 1974.  Within their first month, Firefall had recorded an album and were on the road touring.  They played support for such artists as: Leon Russell, The Doobie Brothers, Tom Waits, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Roy Buchanan, Electric Light Orchestra, The Band, Willie Nelson, and Jerry Jeff Walker.
  • From that first album came two singles. One of them – You Are The Woman – was destined to become their highest charting single.
  • Firefall 2Since those early days, the band has undergone a number of personnel changes but are still touring with Jock Bartley and Mark Andes (bassist for Canned Heat, Heart etc.) heading the line-up.
  • On January 9, 2015, Firefall was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame alongside Poco, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Stephen Stills and Manassas.

you are the woman fax

  • You Are the Woman is from Firefall’s self-titled debut album.
  • Firefall 1Written by band member, Rick Roberts, You Are The Woman peaked at #9 on the US singles chart.  It was Firefall’s highest charting hit.
  • When asked about the song’s popularity, Rick would often reply:

Every female between the ages of 18 and 24 wanted to be the woman portrayed in the song, and that caused their boyfriends and spouses to call radio stations and subsequently flood the airwaves with dedications of the song and the sentiment. The message was simple and sincere, and the song was easy to sing. It was like our fans let us be a singing version of the Hallmark card that said what they weren’t quite sure what to express.

  • Several years later he said of the song:

Everybody knows ‘You Are The Woman’. It ended up kind of being a hindrance because people would only hear ‘You Are The Woman’ and would think, oh, that light Rock band from Colorado. We’re actually a pretty smokin’ Rock band that really has fun onstage and cooks and jams and plays ‘You Are The Woman’ also.

  • A cover of You Are The Woman, by Josh Kelley appeared on the 2005 soundtrack of, Herbie: Fully Loaded.
  • You Are The Woman lyrics.

Cat Scratch Fever – Ted Nugent – 1977

February 12, 2015

Ted Nugent Cat Scratch Fever 1977Here’s one for my mate Wozza – he was into Ted Nugent when the rest of us were asking, “Who?”  Back in 1977, Wozza purchased a copy of Cat Scratch Fever and dazzled us with its brilliance…

Ted Nugent 1ted nugent fax

  • Way back in 1948, Mr and Mrs Nugent had a little boy.  They named him Theodore Anthony Nugent – we came to know him as Ted.
  • Ted’s first flirtation with fame came playing lead guitar with The Amboy Dukes, although he’d been performing as a guitarist since 1958 – that’s right folks, he was only ten years old.  Over time the band became known as, Ted Nugent and The Amboy Dukes.
  • By the mid-70s, The Amboy Dukes had dissolved and Ted went solo.  He had a number of songs in the US Top 100, but only once made it into the Top 40.  His second highest ranking single was Yank Me, Crank Me which peaked at #58 in 1978.  Three studio albums made it inside the Top 20 on the album charts, as did his double live album, Double Live Gonzo!
  • TEd nugent 3During his heyday, Ted was known for spending long periods so time on the road, sometimes playing up to 300 concerts a year.  Ted is still touring today and, in a 2008 show at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Michigan, played his 6,000th concert.
  • Throughout much of his life Ted has been known for his strong conservative political views – he is a supporter of the Republican Party and an advocate for hunting and gun ownership; he is on the board of the National Rifle Association.

ted trivia

  • Ted Nugent 2On April 5, 1968, Ted joined a group of fellow musicians to pay tribute to Martin Luther King with a folk, rock and blues jam session. The line-up was Ted, Joni Mitchell, Buddy Guy, Cactus, Jimi Hendrix, BB King and Al Kooper.
  • Ted suffers from rock ‘n’ roll induced hearing loss.  He has publically acknowledged the issue but adds,

The ear’s not too good, especially with background noise but that’s a small price to pay. Believe me the journey was worth it.

  • The album Cat Scratch Fever was released in May 1977 with the title song featuring as the first track.
  • Cat Scratch Fever was written by Ted Nugent, released at the same time as the album, and peaked at #30 on the US singles chart.
  • Ted says the song is about the disease of boys craving girls.
  • In 2009, VH1 placed Cat Scratch Fever at #32 on the list of the top 100 hard rock songs of all time.
  • In 1999, Pantera covered the song for the Detroit Rock City CD soundtrack.  While their version peaked at #40 on the US charts, Ted was less than impressed saying;

It is exceedingly white. No soul, no balls, no feel. Caucasian all the way.

  • Motorhead and Hayseed Dixies have also released covers.
  • Cat Scratch Fever has appeared on The Simpsons (like so many other 70s songs), and the Detroit Tigers baseball team (Ted’s home team) have been known to play the song at the beginning of home games.
  • Cat Scratch Fever lyrics.

Sugar Baby Love – The Rubettes – 1974

February 9, 2015

The Rubettes Sugar Baby Love 1974Another manufactured band, this time from the UK; back in 1974, The Rubettes hit #1 with Sugar Baby Love.

tThe Rubettes 1he rubettes fax

  • In the early 1970s, Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington wrote a number of songs only to have them rejected by every recording artist they sent them to.  So, they did what any zealous songwriter would do; they created a band and called it, The Rubettes.
  • The Rubettes had immediate success with a #1 UK hit, Sugar Baby Love.  It peaked at #37 in the US.  They followed that with eight more UK top 40 songs.  They released ten albums, the last being in 1995, although they continue to tour (in one form or another) today.
  • The Rubettes AOn stage, The Rubettes are known for their trademark white suits and cloth caps.
  • By the early-2000s, the band had fractured in a number of ways so that there were two bands touring as The Rubettes.  A court case followed over the rightful ownership of the name (just as it had for The Beach Boys and Spandau Ballet).
  • On 21 September 2014, as part of the Rubettes 40th anniversary, original members, Alan Williams, John Richardson and Mick Clarke returned to the Olympia in Paris, the venue of The Rubettes’ first appearance in France in 1974 when Sugar Baby Love topped the French and European charts

  • SunplusSugar Baby Love was written by UK songwriters Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington.
  • It was recorded by The Rubettes in late 1973 and released in January 1974.  It went on to spend four weeks at #1 on the UK charts and peaked at #37 on the US charts.
  • Sugar Baby Love was The Rubettes debut and most successful single.
  • The song was originally written for the Eurovision song contest but Showaddywaddy, the band it was offered to, turned it down.  Wayne and Tony then suggested the demo band release it themselves, on the condition they formed a real band.
  • Sugar Baby Love had something of a resurgence when it was featured in the 1994 movie, Muriel’s Wedding.
  • Sugar Baby Love lyrics.

Annie’s Song – John Denver – 1974

February 3, 2015

Annies Song - 1974 - John DenverIt had to happen one day – it would be John Denver’s turn to feature on seventiesmusic.  I heard him at a party the other night.  I was with a musician friend whose wife’s name is Annie.  Jokingly I asked if my friend ever sang “Annie’s Song” to her.  While not answering the question she did admit that it was her all-time favourite song.

John Denver 3There followed some discussion about John and the general opinion was, despite seeming to be a little weird, John had produced some amazingly good songs (and some amazingly bad ones – Grandma’s Feather Bed = case in point!).

So, here’s this week’s blast from the seventies past – John Denver and his 1974 hit, Annie’s Song

john denver fax

  • John’s real name was Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr.
  • Perhaps some of John’s eccentricities could be explained by the fact that he was born in Roswell, New Mexico.
  • BJOhn Denver 2y the time John was 21 he had established himself as one of the most popular artists of the 70s – he released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed.  He sold over 33 million records including twelve gold and four platinum albums.
  • John won two Grammy Awards and, in 1996, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
  • John also became a spokesperson for various political and environmental causes during the 70s and into the 80s.  This included an interest in oceanography (remember Calypso? His 1975 ode to environmental activist Jacques Cousteau); campaigning for Jimmy Carter (1976); and support for a number of charitable causes for the environmental movement, the homeless, the poor, the hungry, and the African AIDS crisis.
  • John died when his personal aircraft crashed on October 12, 1997.  He was 53.

annie’s song fax

  • Annie’s Song was written by John Denver and released in June 1974.  It was his second #1 US single following his 1973 hit, Sunshine on My Shoulders.  It reached #1 in the UK also – John’s only #1 UK hit.  A number of John’s songs became hits in the UK but for other artists.
  • John Denver 1John wrote Annie’s Song for his wife at the time, Annie Martell Denver. Annie said of the song:

It was written after John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for us. He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen mountain and the song just came to him. He skied down and came home and wrote it down… Initially it was a love song and it was given to me through him, and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer.

  • Annie’s Song was covered as an instrumental by Irish flutist, James Galway – it became his only hit.
  • Annie’s Song lyrics.
