Jet – Wings – 1974

April 24, 2014

Wings Jet 1974Okay, some will argue but, for me, Wings’ album, Band on the Run is one of the greatest albums ever!  And I love this song, from 1974 – Jet!  (Say it staccato, just like on the record).

  • Wings really need no introduction – Paul McCartney was at a loose end following the break-up of his former band and so, in started hanging out with session drummer Denny Seiwell and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine. Add wife, Linda, to the mix and you got Wings.
  • Wings had 12 top 10 singles (including one number 1) in the UK and 14 top 10 singles (including six number 1’s) in the US. All 23 singles released by Wings reached the US top 40, and one double-sided single, “Junior’s Farm”/”Sally G”, reached the top 40 with each side. Of the nine albums released by Wings, all went top 10 in either the UK or the US, with five consecutive albums topping the US charts. The 1973 James Bond movie, Live and Let Die, featured the Wings song of the same name.
  • Wings won six Grammy Awards and were nominated a further six times.  They were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013.
  • In 1977, Wings released the single, Seaside Woman, under the pseudonym, Suzy and the Red Stripes.  It was the only release by Wings under that name and was written and sung by Linda McCartney.

  • Band on the Run was Wings’ third album.  Released in 1973, it was 1974’s top-selling studio album in the UK.
  • In 2012, Band on the Run was voted #418 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
  • Jon Landau said of Band on the Run;

With the possible exception of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band, [it is] the finest record yet released by any of the four musicians who were once called The Beatles.

  • Band on the Run was the last album Paul released on the Apple Records label.
  • All songs on the album, except for No Words, were written by Paul and Linda McCartney.

  • Released in February 1974, Jet featured on Wings’ highly successful Band on the Run album.
  • Jet peaked at #7 the UK and US on 30 March 1974.
  • It’s often been reported that the subject of Jet Paul’s dog named “Jet”.  That’s not how Paul tells it, however.  He claims Jet was the name of a pony he once owned.
  • Australian rock band Jet drew their name from the song.
  • In 2000, The Foo Fighters recorded a cover version of Jet.  It was intended to be included on a Paul McCartney tribute album that was never produced. The Foo Fighters have, however, played the song numerous times live.
  • Jet lyrics.

Hot Child in the City – Nick Gilder – 1978

April 17, 2014

nick-gilder-hot-child-in-the-city-chrysalis-2Sweet, innocent and poppy – Nick Gilder’s 1978 hit, Hot Child in the City, is about something rather more sinister.

  • Born in the UK, moved to Vancouver as a kid, Nick began his musical career as the frontman for a Canadian glam-rock band named Sweeney Todd.  When Nick left the band to go solo, he was replaced by Bryan Adams!
  • Sweeney Todd had one #1 Canadian hit.  Back in June 1976, Roxy Roller sat at the top of the charts for three weeks.
  • Pretty much a one hit wonder, Nick has had a successful songwriting career writing for artists such as Joe Cocker, Bette Midler, and Pat Benatar.
  • Now 62, Nick continues to sing and tour.

  • Hot Child in the City was written by Nick Gilder
  • Lifted from Nick’s second solo album, City Nights, it was released in 1978.
  • Hot Child in the City is about runaway young people.
  • Hot Child in the City hit #1 in both the US and Canada; it barely touched the charts in the UK.
  • The song sounds poppy and innocent but it’s about Nick’s experiences witnessing child prostitution.

I’ve seen a lot of young girls, 15 and 16, walking down Hollywood Boulevard with their pimps. Their home environment drove them to distraction so they ran away, only to be trapped by something even worse. It hurts to see that so I tried writing from the perspective of a lecher – in the guise of an innocent pop song.

  • The Allman Brothers Band began in Jacksonville, Florida, way back in 1969.
  • Lynchpins were brothers Allman and Gregg Allman.
  • They have often been called the architects of Southern rock.
  • Commercial breakthrough for the Allman Brothers Band came in 1971 – their album At Fillmore East is still talked about as one of the best live albums ever made.
  • Rolling Stone magazine pronounced them;

the best damn rock and roll band this country has produced in the past five years.

  • Later that year, on October 29, 1971, Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. Just a few days over a year later (November 11, 1972), and just three blocks away, bassist Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle accident also.
  • Gregg married six times and had another two long term partners. His fourth wife was, of course, Cher.
  • The band continues to tour today. In 1995, they were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
